The Higher Level Teaching Assistant HLTA Assessment is a nationally recognised assessment route for experienced teaching assistants who are already working at a higher level within their role.
It is available as an optional employer-funded add-on for eligible Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprentices from Gateway onward.
This is not a separate training course. It is an assessment-only pathway focused on real school practice, helping to formally recognise existing skills, experience and professional competence.
The HLTA Assessment is designed to formally acknowledge the skills, experience and professional practice of teaching assistants who already operate at a higher level in school.
The assessment confirms that a teaching assistant can work independently with individuals, groups or whole classes, support teaching and learning under the direction of a teacher, and demonstrate professional judgement, responsibility and accountability.
For Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprentices, the HLTA Assessment can provide a clear progression opportunity from Gateway onward. Much of the required evidence may already be generated through the apprenticeship, including planning, pupil learning impact, observations, professional collaboration and feedback.
