CT Skills changed my life for the better

CASE STUDY

This year alone, there are over 5,000 adults in Mansfield who are ready to either learn a new skill or secure full time employment. Amongst those 5,000 seeking a job was Mark O’Connor, 50, who had officially been an unemployed Mansfield resident since 2007.

Over 91% of CT Skills construction learners successfully passed their CSCS card test in 2018

After suffering with personal issues, Mark had struggled to secure a job so in his spare time discovered he had a talent for teaching art and chose to use his free time to volunteer in his local community teaching pensioners and people with learning difficulties which in time slowly grew his confidence and people skills.

However, at the end of 2018 Mark suffered with a few traumas in his life and decided he needed a complete life change. He explains;

“I wanted a career change and to secure a proper job so I went to my local job centre for more information about how I could get back in to employment. This is when they showed me an advertisement with CT Skills which offered a construction qualification and an interview at the end of the course.  It sounded too good to be true, so I immediately signed up to the opportunity.”

Within a week Mark began the course with CT Skills Mansfield and at first he was apprehensive about being back in a classroom but as soon as he met his tutor, Andy, he immediately settled and felt excited about what was to come.

He continues;

“I couldn’t fault the course, Andy was very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. He always felt happy to share his knowledge in a way that I understood which I found a great help. The course completely changed me for the better as it made me feel more confident and unafraid to try something new.”

The construction course Mark completed was delivered over 11 days and upon completion of the course he earned the following:

Level 1 Certificate in Construction

Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment

Level 1 in Personal Development for Employability

CSCS card, practice and test

Mark concludes;

“After completing the course, I knew I had the right qualifications behind me, which meant there were more opportunities available. In a matter of time I eventually secured a role working on the railway as a track worker. I do work a lot of hours, but I am really enjoying it and basically haven’t looked back since.”

Andy Roles Construction Tutor with CT Skills Mansfield said;

“It was very clear to me from meeting Mark on day one of the Construction course that he was a great guy with a burning desire to improve his skills in order to secure a bright future for himself and those close to him. Mark spoke to me with infectious enthusiasm about his plans to progress from the course onto a track work training program and from there to becoming a construction worker in the railway industry.

Given my experience of Mark’s work ethic and positive attitude I never once doubted that he would achieve his goals. I would like to extend my gratitude to Mark for being such an inspirational force to others wanting to follow a similar path and I wish him the continued success he so thoroughly deserves.”

By sharing his story, Mark was entered in to a prize draw and won £50 of Love2Shop vouchers. If you are a learner and have a story to share please get in touch with marketing@ctskills.co.uk
