Case Study: I am now writing my own book after completing an English course with CT Skills Nottingham
Johanna Farrell, 49, first came to CT Skills after leaving her stressful job as a Project Manager and deciding she wanted a complete career change, but required the qualifications to do so.
The single mum of three had a very busy career which meant she would often travel away with work and not have the quality time she wanted to spend with her children. After leaving her job, Johanna began to think about her long term passions and goals, which is when she thought about her love for writing.
She began to search for opportunities where she would be able to use her creativity, but soon realised that she did not have the qualifications or skills required to work in her chosen industry. Johanna knew that she did not did not want to go back to the classroom to study for her GCSE’s for two years, so began researching alternative courses.
“I didn’t leave school with any qualifications in English and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to build a career as a writer without this. I eventually spoke to a careers advisor who told me about the Functional Skills in English course with CT Skills and I quickly signed up to this fantastic opportunity… this is when I began to see a bright future ahead of me.”
Johanna began the English course at Entry Level 3 and was extremely nervous on her first day about stepping back in to a classroom environment, however as soon as she met her tutor Lisa she began to feel much more comfortable.
“As I suffer with dyslexia I was probably more nervous than I should have been about going back to a classroom. Once I began the course, I felt so relaxed as Lisa is extremely passionate about what she does, so she provides a fun, friendly and positive learning environment. I settled in straight away and have even become very close with the other people in the class who are all here for different reasons, but have the same goal.”
Johanna completed the Entry Level 3 course and soon moved on to Level 1 and has now just begun the Level 2 course which she is very excited about.
“Level 2 English has been my favorite so far as it is much more in depth as we are now studying great writers such as Shakespeare and understanding the meaning of his words. Since beginning the course I am pleased to say I have began writing my own children’s book which I hope to one day get published. Without the help, support and guidance from Lisa and everyone at CT Skills, Nottingham this wouldn’t have been possible for me. I am now doing something that I had always dreamed about doing!”
Functional Skills English tutor, Lisa Palmer- Wilson concludes on Johanna’s journey with CT Skills;
“Johanna has been fantastic from the beginning and she has come along amazingly! When she first began the course she was very nervous, but she has gone from strength to strength and I am thrilled that she now has the confidence to write her own book. She has a new focus in life and all I can say is that I am really proud of her.”
