Case Study: I always wanted to follow in my Mum’s footsteps… and now I have!

CT Skills were delighted to recruit eighteen year old Sophie Howard as the 17th childcare apprentice, with leading Leicestershire nursery, Castle Lane Nursery.

For years, Sophie had always longed for a career in childcare, as growing up she had always seen her Mum work in a school or nursery setting and aspired to be like her.  As soon as Sophie left school she knew she wanted to pursue the same career and after completing her GCSE’s she naturally progressed up to her local college to continue her studies in Childcare.

After a year at college, Sophie was soon beginning to realise the environment wasn’t suited to her and the long travel of getting four trains a day was beginning to takes its toll. This is when Sophie decided to ask her mum, Lorraine for advice. At the time Loraine had been working as a Nursery Nurse with Castle Lane Nursery and was just about to begin a childcare apprenticeship through CT Skills so she could upskill herself within the workplace.

Lorraine said;

“I had always been a carer for my son who has special needs and my daughter Sophie would often support me with this.  I used to work part-time as a supervisor at a local primary school and eventually moved on and in to my role at Castle Lane. I knew Sophie would be great at it too, so when she was unsure about college, I organised for her to complete a work placement at Castle Lane.”

Sophie was delighted to be given the opportunity to undertake a work placement at Castle Lane, during this time she was given a variety of roles to fill at the nursery. She loved each day she was there and the team was equally impressed with how well she fitted in and adapted to every situation she was faced with.

Sophie commented;

“I felt so much more settled at Castle Lane and I prefer working in this environment, it was also nice to have my mum there for reassurance. After my placement I had great feedback and within a few months they offered me an apprenticeship opportunity through CT Skills.”

Lorraine and Sophie are now both working towards their Level 2 Childcare apprenticeships through CT Skills and once qualified they will have the skills and expertise for a rewarding career in childcare.

Lorraine said;

“Even though I have worked with children for a long time, the apprenticeship has been great so far and I feel as though I have a better understanding of children already. You are never too old for an apprenticeship and I can’t wait to be completing a qualification with my daughter Sophie!”

Sophie concluded;

“For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would say to go for one!”
