Case Study: Boxing enthusiast completes Childcare apprenticeship with CT Skills
With only 3% of men working in pre-primary education, CT Skills were delighted to meet 18 year old childcare apprentice, Ryan Hearst from Leicester. Ryan breaks the mould of a traditional Nursery Assistant in many ways, most notably with his out-of-work passion for boxing. It was his uniqueness that caught the attention of leading Leicestershire nursery, Gingerbread 2.
Ryan first approached CT Skills after leaving school and making the realisation that a work-based learning environment may offer more opportunities to him as he started out his career. CT Skills advisors worked with Ryan and identified that as well as his keen interest in boxing and fitness, he also had a natural affinity with children that came from years of caring for his younger cousins after school.
Within weeks Ryan was enrolled onto a Traineeship programme with a local nursery to see if he enjoyed the environment. A Traineeship programme offers young people the opportunity to develop industry specific skills and participate in a 100hr work-experience of their choice.
"I had never been in a nursery before, so a Traineeship gave me a real taste of what it was like to be in that environment. I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone as it made me want to pursue an apprenticeship in childcare."
After two weeks, Ryan was rewarded for his initiative and secured a Level 2 apprenticeship in Childcare for a local nursery. He has since gone on to complete a Level 3 qualification, leading to his promotion as a full time Nursery Assistant working with 0-4 year olds.
“I really enjoyed my apprenticeship with CT skills, my tutor Paula helped me a lot and was always on the other end of the phone to offer advice if I was ever struggling. My confidence has massively grown since completing the apprenticeship which has also made me even more confident in the boxing ring."
