After graduating from university, Toyah-Marie, 24, decided she wanted to continue her studies by applying for a post-graduate teaching qualification (PGCE) with the University of Derby in order to fulfill her dream of becoming an Art & Media teacher.
During the application process, the university confirmed that even though Toyah-Marie had an undergraduate degree, she did not have GCSE maths at grade C/4 or above which is the minimum requirement in order to be accepted on to a teaching training course in the UK.
Toyah-Marie had previously resat her maths GCSE whilst studying for her A Levels and unfortunately did not pass. In a bid to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher she went to a local training provider for help with passing her Functional Skills maths at Level 2 – a qualification which would be accepted as an alternative.
“I went to the training provider for help and unfortunately I didn’t feel supported. I struggled to learn anything and when it came to sitting the test my confidence was very low, so I failed again.”
Still motivated to pass the qualification, Toyah-Marie searched for an alternative provider online which is when she came across CT Skills, Derby. As she had less than 6 weeks before the university course started, Toyah- Marie quickly reserved her space on to the next session with CT Skills as this was now her last chance.
“I started the course that Friday and I felt so welcomed by everyone there. As soon as I met my tutor, Richard, I felt immediately at ease and never once felt pressure… it was a completely comfortable learning environment for me. The course is normally 6 weeks, but I explained to Richard I only had 5 weeks before the teacher training started, so he set out a plan for this to be achieved. I felt like he had a lot of confidence in me.”
During the 5 weeks, Toyah-Marie studied a variety of modules including fractions, percentages, measurement and probability. With limited time left, Richard ensured that the work was adjusted to suit Toyah-Marie, so that she had all the knowledge required before she sat the exam.
“I was very nervous sitting the test as I knew it was my last chance, but Richard calmed me down and even had a back up date planned just in case I failed. I received my results soon after and I could not believe that I had finally passed. I felt for once that nothing was holding me back and that wouldn’t have been possible without Richard and everyone at CT Skills, Derby!”
The results came in only two days before the teacher-training course began, so Toyah-Marie quickly contacted the University of Derby, who were pleased to confirm that she had now secured a place on the course with them.
“I have now begun my PGCE and it is fantastic! I am so happy that I came to CT Skills and achieved something that I never thought would be possible. I just wish I had come here sooner, they supported me every step of the way. I would say to anyone in my position to do it now, before you regret it!”
