Case Study: How I secured a new job at 63 thanks to CT Skills Mansfield

Case Study

After being unemployed for over a year, Christopher Taylor, 63, was beginning to doubt whether he would secure work ever again. The married father of two had been in manual labour work for over 40 years and struggled when he was made redundant at the age of 62, as his long term plan was to retire within a matter of years.

As he had never used a computer before, Christopher was keen to get back in to work so his two daughters helped him to create a CV online and even added it to a variety of job sites in a bid to help their Dad secure work again.

Christopher explains;

“I was trying to find a way back in to work, it felt strange as the last time I was in this position I just looked in a newspaper and called up the employer. It is very different now and I found it hard to get to grips with submitting a C.V online, which is why my children helped me.  I remember once we spent the day sending out hundreds of C.Vs and I only heard back from 2 employers saying they would be in touch, but I never heard anything again… it can really get you down and knock your confidence.”

Unsure about how he would ever secure a job, Christopher went to his local job centre and spoke with CT Skills Learner Engagement Officer, Stevie, who told him about an IT & Employability course with CT Skills, Mansfield. The short course offered Christopher the chance to understand the basic IT Skills required to use a computer as well as how to understand the online Universal Credit sytem. Upon completion of the course he would receive industry recognised qualifications in IT and Employability.

He continues;

“I had never been offered such a great opportunity and I couldn’t believe it when I was told it was fully-funded! I was nervous about starting the course, as I can’t remember the last time I was in a classroom.  However the group I was in were really good and I enjoyed getting to know everyone.  My tutor, Anthony was more like a friend which is what made it different to being at school because you can make friends, have a laugh and relax as well as getting the work done.”

Only a week after completing the course, Christopher attended an interview with leading contact centre solutions company, Prolog.  A day later Christopher was offered a job in the warehouse which meant he would have to use an online booking system to process items being distributed. Thanks to the course, Christopher felt confident about this.

He concludes;

 “I am really excited about starting my job with Prolog and I can’t wait to have a reason to get up in the morning.  I would definitely recommend a course with CT Skills as it has meant I can still get a job and gain a qualification… even at my age! I can now enjoy my final few years of work and can look forward to retirement.”
