After beginning a career as a Sports Therapist and accidentally falling into Business Development, Cath Albans gained her experience with a variety of training providers before joining the CT Skills family in September 2017 as a Key Account Manager.
We caught up with Cath to find out how she is getting on in her role since she joined us last year.
Q&A interview with Key Account Manager, Cath Albans
“I work in a fantastic team, with a very supportive manager! The whole company is so supportive.”
Have you always worked within Business Development & Sales?
No, I first trained as a Sports Therapist and worked within semi professional football for a number of years. I worked with the first team part time, and with the young apprentices during the day which gave me excellent experience of working with apprentices. I loved it, but when I met my husband and had a family, it became increasingly difficult to work evenings and weekends as well as over the holidays, so I moved in to Leisure Management. I worked in two leisure centres, managing the health and fitness provision and working with the local community on GP Referral Schemes. It was extremely rewarding, but again I found leisure hours difficult when managing a family too.
One evening I was approached by one of the gym member’s who asked if I had ever considered assessing. After speaking to her further, she told me all about her company and they were looking to take someone on as soon as possible. Within a month or so I had started my Assessors Award, and I spent a number of years assessing learners in Management, Customer Service and Sales. I found this role very rewarding, and felt proud of the difference I could make to learners lives.
Due to changes in the business, I naturally progressed in to Business Development and Sales, as everyone knows – I can talk! After working in a couple of different providers over the past few years, I can safely say that in September 2017, I found my home at CT Skills.
Could you describe a typical day in your role at CT Skills?
Every day is so varied which is why I love it so much. I like to get out and talk to employers about how CT Skills can support their growth, sometimes this is just over a coffee and other times it may be at a board meeting. I like to dig and find out where we need to support them, and every employer is different with their own unique challenges to overcome. When they hear what support is available, and about the quality of the service we offer, they become excited about the possibilities of working together and I get a real buzz when they ask me for help. I may then spend the rest of the day responding to emails and calls from employers, and creating reports for our key accounts on the progress that is being made. Most days we talk as a team, and celebrate each others’ successes, as well as sharing new ideas and planning for the month ahead.
What do you love about your role?
CT Skills is a company that listens to everybody’s ideas and it is exciting to be able to influence the direction that we are travelling. It doesn’t matter what your role is at CT Skills, everyone is treated like family, and together we achieve some incredible things. I 100% believe in the quality of the service that we offer, and I speak to employers with the full knowledge that the promises I make to them will be kept. My highlight to date would be my account, Derbyshire Care Services being chosen as the Care Apprenticeship Employer of the Year Award at the Asian Apprenticeship Awards in Birmingham last year. It was fabulous to see them recognised for all of their hard work.
Do you have any advice to someone considering a job with CT Skills?
Just take the leap! I cannot recommend CT Skills highly enough as an employer. When I talk to other colleagues in the industry they don’t believe me, they want to know what the catch is. I can honestly say that moving to CT Skills was the best career move I have ever made. The whole company is striving to achieve the same goal, and we are truly on a journey to outstanding!
