Learner Case Study: Selina Atwal

At the beginning of 2017, Selina Atwal was looking for a career change after working long hours as an Air Hostess for an international airline. 

Feeling unsure about what her future would hold, Selina secured a busy receptionist role with civil engineering solutions and project management company, Rodgers Leask. At the time of joining the business, Rodgers Leask were faced with some huge changes which as soon as Selina started she immediately offered to get involved with as much as she could. The receptionist would often do this by assisting with any administration duties specifically to the HR department.
General Manager Andy Smith commented;

“When Selina first joined, it was a completely new role and experience for her. Not only did she learn the role and how the business operated, but she also raised all the relevant HR documentation as well as changing the new starter process at both of the offices in Derby and Birmingham.”

After only a few months in the business, Selina had proved how hardworking and committed she was at her job, which is when Andy decided to enhance her skills further by enrolling her on to a Business Administration Level 3 Apprenticeship with CT Skills.

Andy continues: “When she first joined us we knew she had greater capability than she realised and I hoped to be able to bring this out in her by getting her the right qualifications through an apprenticeship with CT Skills. Selina is busy at her own role but is also willing to support everyone else all whilst taking the time out to complete her apprenticeship.

Selina most recently competed against 24 finalists to win the Integrity Award at the Made in the Midlands Apprenticeship Awards hosted by Derby City Councillor, Frank Harwood at CT Skills Derby Centre.
Discussing her success, Selina said;

“Initially, I was very surprised to have won the award especially as there were so many great finalists in the room! Shortly after that, I felt overjoyed to be recognised for my hard work.

It has been a great experience doing an apprenticeship with CT Skills and I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone thinking about doing one. I have gained a much wider knowledge and understanding of the business sector which I now apply to my current role at Rodgers Leask.”

Andy said;“I am extremely pleased to see Selina win the award, she is very motivated and I would be lost without her in the business.  Apprenticeships were designed for people like Selina, hard working and looking to learn and improve.”
